What Most Fence Builders Job Listings Don't Tell You
General overview for this role type; specifics vary by employer.
Fence building in Texas does not require a state trade license, which keeps the field open to hard workers who learn the craft. Quality and reliability separate the pros. Pay is hourly or per job, and crew leads who can read a layout, run a crew, and estimate accurately earn the most. Storm damage and the steady pace of new homes in the Houston metro keep demand strong most of the year.
New hires learn that fencing is heavy outdoor labor with real skill behind it. You dig or auger post holes through Houston clay, set posts plumb in concrete, and build straight, level runs across uneven ground. Materials range from wood and chain link to ornamental iron and vinyl, each with its own methods. Summer heat and physical strain are constant. The upside is fast, visible progress and a finished product you can stand back and see. Crews who work clean, hit their lines, and finish on time build the referrals that keep the schedule full.
What to Expect Day-to-Day
General overview for this role type; specifics vary by employer.
A crew starts by marking the fence line, checking property boundaries, and laying out post spacing. Much of the day is setting posts. You dig or auger holes, place posts, check them plumb, and set them in concrete so the line stays straight and true. On uneven Houston lots this takes care to keep the run level and clean.
Once posts cure, you build out the fence. You attach rails, hang pickets or panels, and set gates that swing true and latch right. Wood, iron, chain link, and vinyl each call for different hardware and technique. You manage materials, keep cuts consistent, and clean up debris and old fence as you go. Communication with the homeowner covers gate placement and any surprises underground. Expect digging, lifting, saw work, and heat from start to finish, rewarded by a finished fence that transforms a yard in a day or two of visible progress.

Building a Fencing Career in Texas
Fence building needs no state trade license in Texas. Skill and reliability are the credentials. Crews learn post setting, layout on uneven ground, and the methods for wood, iron, chain link, and vinyl. Larger commercial and automated-gate work can require electrical coordination and permits. The path is reputation based. You build speed and quality on the crew, learn to read a layout and estimate, and move into lead and sales roles. Experienced builders who bid accurately and finish clean can grow their own fencing company.
